Ryan O'Connell's latest single "Snail" is an infectious indie rock anthem with a punk rock edge that cleverly uses whimsy to convey deeper emotional themes. O'Connell has a knack for writing songs that initially appear light-hearted, but upon closer inspection, reveal significant pondering. "Snail" follows this tradition perfectly.

The song opens with O'Connell finding solace on a dusty log, accompanied by frogs. As he croons, "I made my way to a dusty log / I found my place just hanging with the frogs," listeners are drawn into a seemingly carefree world that quickly takes a turn. But it's not long before his frog friends are gone, leaving him alone sitting in the log.

O'Connell then introduces a girl who initially elevates him but ultimately leaves him feeling even more isolated. "Well I met this girl, made me feel like / I was on top of the world," he sings, only to uncover her "deepest darkest secrets." This revelation leads into the chorus, where he uses the snail metaphor to describe her: "She's got a shell / Stuck in her condition / Might as well / Admit that she is a snail." Beneath its playful surface, "Snail" cleverly uses the metaphor of a snail to explore the weight of depression, depicting the heavy, often invisible burden carried by those struggling with mental health.

The second verse revisits the log, now a symbol of O'Connell's solitude and longing for companionship. "The world's your oyster or so I'm told / Find your partner and heal your soul," he reflects, only to acknowledge his loneliness.
