Marvelle Oaks, the husband-and-wife duo of Alex and Tess Demir, have mashed a pot of indie tea with their latest single, "It's Tomorrow", released on July 10, 2024. This track, the first taste of their forthcoming LP Fuzzzo due out in September, is a compelling blend of raw guitar and drum textures that makes for a rather unpolished yet refreshingly addictive sound.
"It's Tomorrow" is a vivid exploration of memory, sensibly aimed at capturing the essence of fleeting moments and the surreal way they resurface, unbidden and often overwhelming. Drawing clear inspiration from The Velvet Underground, Pavement, and The B-52s, The lyrics sift through childhood recollections and life's pivotal moments with a casual storytelling style. The Mock Orange-esque chorus, with its repetitive and almost mindlessly sung "It's tomorrow," pulls the listener back to the present even as they drift through the past.
The song opens with a scene from a parents' party on a Saturday night, seen from the eyes of a youngster: "I'm three feet tall and I'm taking flight / Running through a maze of legs / Made my way to the guest room bed / Hid myself in the fake fur coats / With aromas of perfume and smoke." With an imagery so rich it quickly transplants one into that bygone adventure.
As the song progresses, it chronicles more oddly interesting experiences—like climbing to a rooftop after a certain Shelly calls, learning about 90 proof, waking up on the lawn, and the fear and wonder of becoming a parent. "Suddenly, / It's tomorrow / It's tomorrow," they muse. The Demirs couldn't have emphasized more the passage of time and the inevitable arrival of tomorrow than when they sang that chorus in unison. It's just that, but it hits home.
Marvelle Oaks offer a really cool meditation on memory and presence with "It's Tomorrow". The pair's latest offering sets a high bar for what to expect from Fuzzzo and promises a full-length rich in introspection and indie rock prowess.
