A smooth guitar and select husky moments bring Jared Harper’s latest single “About You” back to his roots while honoring the musical growth he’s seen since appearing on Season 18 of The Voice. The flair of alt-country and the emotional weight of indie rock layer over each other in this 2020 anthem of longing for a distant love.
The grungy, delayed bass rings out under the acoustic guitar. It’s raw and edged with petition. The pointed, purposefully “unfinished” vocal mixing too forward in the mix like an authentic plea. Every musical choice stitches the narrative of someone trying to play it cool, but failing miserably; their heart is on their sleeve and begging to see their love again.
“So, I’ve been thinking about you lately,” Jared Harper nonchalantly sings, over and over, diminishing the blasé attempt before abandoning it altogether. Near the middle of the song, he readily admits that “But if I heard you say, ‘Baby, just one more day.’”
From that moment, the song squarely rests in desire: the heartache of missing someone and feeling isolated, a situation 2020 brought to too many lovers.
