OPM folk singer Coritha passes away

Filipino folk music icon Coritha passed away on the evening of September 27, 2024. She was 73 years old. The news was confirmed by her partner, Lusito "Chito" Santos, in a video posted by broadcaster Julius Babao on YouTube.

Coritha, born Socorro Avelino, died at 7:50 p.m. after battling health issues, including multiple strokes and diabetes. Santos revealed that while Coritha fought courageously, he could no longer bear to see her suffer. He thanked fans for their unwavering support and prayers during Coritha's final days.

Just a month before her passing, a concert featuring several OPM artists was held to raise funds for her medical treatment.

Santos shared that Coritha wished for her remains to be cremated. His sister, Dr. Digna Santos, told Babao that a viewing for her cremated remains will be held next weekend in Tagaytay City.

Meanwhile, many veteran OPM artists have paid tribute to the singer, including Freddie Aguilar, Jim Paredes, Cooky Chua, Bayang Barrios, and Jesse Bartolome. "This coming Oct. 12, I and some of my friends will do a tribute concert for the legendary Pinoy Folk Icon Coritha because of our love for her," Bartolome announced on Facebook.

The folk singer's enduring legacy is marked by her iconic protest anthems from the 1960s and 1970s. Best known for her stirring protest song "Oras Na", alongside beloved tracks like "Sierra Madre", "Gising na, O Kuya Ko", and "Lolo Jose", she is celebrated for her use of traditional Filipino instruments and moving lyrics.
