Indie rock aficionados are in for a treat as Modesto, CA's Paper Space just dropped their latest single, "Impression". The track, which serves as the lead single from their forthcoming album Deathlike, continues the band's flair for channeling '90s college rock nostalgia with a modern twist.
"Impression" introduces listeners to the emotional depth of Deathlike, a concept album that intricately explores the journey of an ICU patient striving to mend fractured family bonds while grappling with severe illness and disfigurement. The song's heartfelt lyrics and impassioned delivery by lead singer Max Basso capture the narrator's struggles with altered appearance and the quest for meaningful connections with his partner and child, setting the stage for the album's broader themes of personal growth and resilience in the face of adversity.
The release of Deathlike, slated for October 11, 2024, marks Paper Space's second full-length effort and promises to be a sonic evolution from their earlier garage rock roots. The album, self-produced by the band and mixed by Jack Shirley, who has worked with notable artists like Jeff Rosenstock, combines introspective singer-songwriter elements with power pop exuberance, psychedelic experimentation, and classic rock influences.
Paper Space comprises lead songwriter Max Basso, multi-instrumentalist Curtis Walls, and bassist Miles Ishmael. The trio formed in 2014 and has since evolved into a more sophisticated outfit. Their new album reflects years of artistic growth, recorded in various intimate settings, including a mountainside cabin and their own Shed Studios.
