The new year kicks off with a bang as Brooklyn-based artist Ian Abel drops his latest single, "Not Our Song", a cheeky and upbeat anthem for anyone who's ready to kick toxic exes to the curb. Released today, the track blends energetic drum-and-bass grooves with '90s-inspired synths, all topped off with Abel's signature breathy vocals. The result is a catchy, fast-paced pop gem that speaks to anyone who's done with a relationship that has overstayed its welcome.
Written by Abel and produced by multi-instrumentalist Carey Clayton, "Not Our Song" is a playful, yet poignant reflection on a relationship's end. "I wanted to write about how a tired relationship can be like getting a song stuck in your head," Abel explains. "And sometimes the best way to get it out is to play that song one last time."
With its cheeky double entendre, "Not Our Song" is unapologetically the breakup anthem we didn't know we needed. Abel's whimsical lyrics and infectious beats make it clear: no couple will be claiming this as their song anytime soon.
Along with the single, Abel has released a quirky music video and a radio edit of the track. Fans can catch him live in Brooklyn, with a special release show at C'mon Everybody on January 17.
