“Picture this: lost in the depth of the grip of the human condition.”
Pretty in Between’s single, “Clear”, from their upcoming debut LP plays on the heavy concept of uniting opposites. It’s an “anthem of resolute positivity,” as they say, that creates a place for inner peace while we contemplate binaries and the beauty in between.
Once the chill opening chords and light vocalization set the stage, frontman Austin Wasielewski opens with the first pair of opposites: “I just want to give you all the answers/ I just want to ask you all the questions.” The paradox is resolved in the third vocal line, when they proclaim, “I just want to go clear.”
As the word “clear” intones across the bright and shifting rhythms and harmonies created by Ryan Lee (bassist and producer) and Kale Franke (drummer), it transforms from an aim to a fully-realized state. It becomes the milestone markers as Pretty in Between explore each diametrically opposite set.
With the ending chord ringing, a peaceful brass solo and sparkling keys carry the final word, “clear,” into the ether. Our cosmic picture of the human condition and all its clashing natures has been painted.
