Nashville trio Together Breakfast are officially on, dropping their debut single "Lunch with Your Friends" earlier this month. A track that brings an exciting twist to math rock, it shines through with its intricate guitar riffs, unexpected grooves, and a blend of jazz, funk, and rock influences. The track is not just a musical offering, but a "healthy and balanced meal" for the ears, designed to nourish and challenge listeners with its complex yet vibey structure.
Formed in late 2022, Together Breakfast's musicality is a curious blend of styles, with guitarist Margot Biever weaving shimmering, melodic riffs that are both sharp and intricate, while drummer Ian Strobino provides aggressive yet laid-back rhythms, grounding the song with unpredictable, yet precise grooves. Zach Goforth's bass, drawing from a mix of Motown and Midwest emo influences, rounds out the trio's dynamic sound, giving "Lunch with Your Friends" its unmistakable drive.
The song's origins trace back to Biever's initial riff ideas, which were sent to Strobino for jamming. The chemistry between the two was instant, and soon after, Goforth joined, bringing his own distinct flavor to the track. The result is a song that is both expansive and tight, an exhilarating ride through shifting time signatures and playful syncopation.
"Lunch with Your Friends" was produced by Catherine Vericolli at Sputnik Sound in Nashville and recorded in February of 2024, alongside the rest of the band's debut EP, Lunch with Your Friends, Dinner with Your Ancestors, due out on February 5.
