SWiiMS’ “Hand of Love” is pure dream pop decadence

The closing ostinato is lengthy and passionate, with booming drum fills and improvisational guitar licks that absorb the listener in a hypnotic lull.

Sup? is a feature franchise on UNXIGNED where we literally just answer the category in question and give you some insights into a promising artist or band’s work. In this Sup? issue, we present to you Canadian four-piece SWiiMS and their song “Hand of Love”.

Dark shadows and hazy soundscapes cover nearly every track on Through Waves, the debut EP from Toronto-based indie outfit SWiiMS. Their moody sonic presence is at full swing here with an impressive collection of dream pop tunes.

EP highlight “Hand of Love” is no exception, combining gloomy pop atmospheres with new wave-inspired hooks. The song’s vibe is perhaps most accurately described through its accompanying music video, which is essentially an out-of-focus perspective of someone wandering down a blurry city sidewalk at night.

That foggy, sedated point-of-view is portrayed musically with a mellow groove that eases into a moody sadness. Hot guitar leads in the song’s chorus add a colorful energy to the track amidst melancholic lyrics.

The closing ostinato is lengthy and passionate, with booming drum fills and improvisational guitar licks that absorb the listener in a hypnotic lull. The vocals by lead singer Mai Diaz Langou are blissfully reserved, perfectly complimenting the track’s lush dreaminess.

In short, “Hand of Love” is pure dream pop decadence, perfectly brought to life by SWiiMS’ talented musicianship.
