Los Angeles indie artist Sagittaire turns trauma into beauty with his latest single. “Get Back” is the first single off of Sagittaire’s forthcoming album, titled Saravah Rollercoaster, which will be his second full-length release of the year.
Sagittaire is the musical project of Ivan Mairesse, a West Coast indie artist who started making music in the wake of the Ghost Ship warehouse fire of 2016, a disaster in Oakland, California, that Mairesse narrowly escaped.
Since then, Mairesse has created music through Sagittaire as a therapeutic process of confronting trauma. On “Get Back”, Sagittaire’s dense and expansive sound is at full force.
Ethereal, atmospheric horns are greeted by hand drums and a hypnotic rattling hi-hat before Mairesse’s layered vocal delivery envelops the track in a comforting malaise. Catchy hooks are accompanied by carefully composed instrumentation and delicate soundscapes.
The track reaches its peak during a lengthy closing section—complete with spoken word segments, droning synths, and a wailing trumpet in the background—that evokes a soothing beauty.
Without a doubt, Sagittaire has succeeded at creating a piece of musical elegance that’s not to be missed.
