Young and in love—the quintessential coming of age tale we all know. The New Twentys bottle that bittersweet moment, the bliss and the agony, into their latest single, “You Got Me Good”.
The liberating feeling is tightly conveyed with bright keys and bouncing guitars. The interjections and call and responses feel like old friends remembering their first loves.
The universal nature of “You Got Me Good” is an easy topic to relate with. Born from a conversation with a friend and photographer named Sam, it is a tale of love and preoccupation. “Surrounded by thousands of people, all I can think about is you,” they sing, inspired by Sam being hung up on a girl he met in London. He was so crazy about her in that even when he was with his family in Amsterdam for King’s Day, he couldn’t get her out of his mind.
And while Harry was laying some of the initial groundwork for the song, Jimmy walked in and added the opening guitar riff and the line “Who’d of thought that I, would say you always had me all along?”
Each member had a story. And it’s easy to put your own into the lyrics too.
