Jess Chalker returns with a new single, “Don’t Fight It”. As the teaser track for their upcoming album, Hemispheres, it’s a beautiful, bittersweet look at the themes they’ll address.
“It was written at a time when I was going through some personal stuff, trying really hard to please everyone,” Chalker shared in a statement. Instead of suffering through the diminishment of herself, she surrendered to the feeling of being lost. “Acknowledging that made me realize I needed to change where I was going.”
The diminishment and rebirth sit at the heart of the lyric/music video. As an 8-bit reduction of life swirls around a pair of floating lips, Jess Chalker’s powerful, crystal-clear vocals ring out. Her warm vocals and peppy beat smash up against the minor chords and downward resolutions. The swirling combination on screen and in our ears fights the same fight alongside Chalker.
“Breathe it in and breathe it out,” she commands. There’s release in those words. As more and more of Jess Chalker is built from the pixels and abstracted designs, her new road becomes clearer. The dark opening verse stating “drivin’ on the left side, thinkin’ on the right” returns with a hopeful air before concluding with a final chorus that fades away.
