Drawing inspiration from musical legends Paul McCartney and Harry Nilsson, the song showcases the band's knack of blending classic influences with modern rockness. The result is a song that feels both timeless and contemporary, characterized by lovely vocal harmonizations and an addictive melody.
The creation of "Everyday" was an organic process that began with a simple chord progression on the guitar. "The song started as a chord progression that I'd written on guitar. It never really went anywhere until one day I sat down at the piano and it just fell into place," shared lead songwriter David McGuire. This serendipitous moment at the piano allowed the song to evolve naturally, leading to a piece that feels effortlessly cohesive.
Lyrically, "Everyday" delves into themes of impermanence and the importance of living in the moment. The artist reflected on personal experiences and broader human struggles, particularly those of a friend grappling with addiction. "As far as the lyrics, I had been reflecting on the fact that everything is temporary and that I need to be present in the moment. I had a friend struggling with addiction and was trying to say to him, 'hang in there, things will be ok.' Ultimately though I think it's semi-autobiographical. Every time I try to write a song about someone, it ultimately ends up being about me."
The chorus captures the essence of this message with poignant lines: "Did you lose the love / That used to hang above? / But nothing ever comes for free / Did you sell your soul / For your rock and roll? / But did it bring you to your knees?"
"Everyday" stands out not only for its lyrical depth but also for its musical arrangement, reminiscent of McCartney's melodic sensibility and Nilsson's lyrical honesty. It is a comforting yet thought-provoking listen, with the harmonized vocals adding a layer of warmth and sincerity.
