Baba Shrimps’ “By the Window” is a playful ska-esque ode to revival and reminiscing

Released just last July, this ambitious, masterfully crafted track is one hell of an electronic avant-ska ode to reminiscing and regaining strength after soaking in nostalgia.

Sup? is a feature franchise on UNXIGNED where we literally just answer the category in question and give you some insights into a promising artist or band’s work. In this Sup? issue, we present to you Switzerland three-piece Baba Shrimps and “By the Window”, the second single off of their upcoming full-length.

Swiss musicians Adrian Kübler, Luca Burkhalter, and Moritz Vontobel have been playing together for over a decade, and stopping seems to be nowhere in their to-do list. Going by the name Baba Shrimps, the threesome combine their respective musical affinities and forge a sound that is solely theirs. With their steady rise and their sound’s glowing reception in the scene, the lads are clearly among those that are worth keeping watch.

“By the Window” is the latest offering from the trio. Released just last July, this ambitious, masterfully crafted track is one hell of an electronic avant-ska ode to reminiscing and regaining strength after soaking in nostalgia. The song follows the story of “an incorrigible romantic who has been waiting for years and days for his lover to finally stand under his window again,” the band via their website revealed.

The lyrics “I’ll be waiting by the window just for you/ I’ll be checking every doorway you came through” obviously depicts Kübler assuming the role of someone who has lost at least half his mind following an upsetting relationship demise. Without restraint and with conviction, he sings “By the Window” in utter wishfulness, getting his grievances across atop an ironically cheerful rootsy electro-pop orchestration built on folk, electronica, and rock genre hybrid reminiscent of Twenty One Pilots’.

Now, over three years after their last issue, Road to Rome, the Switzerland three-piece are gearing up for the release of their third album, which is expected to drop anytime soon.
