Lara Taubman explores need for emotional freedom and true joy in The Gospel of Getting Free

After years of curating and critiquing art, New York-based singer-songwriter Lara Taubman has channeled her creative energy into music, and her latest effort, The Gospel of Getting Free, is her most transformative work yet. This third album presents Taubman's journey toward emotional freedom and joy through ten evocative tracks.

"The same ideas that drove me to write the songs for The Gospel of Getting Free also helped me come up with the songs for the first two albums," says Lara Taubman of the new material, which, while founded on her signature style, presents a refreshing twist and tells her story from a renewed, refreshed, and positive perspective.

Opening the album, "Home at Last" sets a hopeful tone, embodying the sense of arrival and belonging that Taubman has long sought. This is followed by "The Siren", a haunting melody that weaves a tale of allure and danger.

"A Reason I Was Born" is an uplifting anthem, born out of her experiences with somatic therapy, which brought newfound hope and clarity, while "Assyrian King" mixes historical and personal elements that delve into purpose and identity.

"The Odyssey" and "Sugar" tackle darker themes with a nuanced perspective. "The Odyssey" recounts tales of heartbreak, yet it is imbued with subtle humor and resilience, signaling Taubman's growth and healing. "Sugar" explores the grip of addiction, but instead of wallowing in despair, it offers a glimpse of light and the possibility of overcoming personal demons.

In the latter part of the album, "So Not Me" and "Sing Your Song" highlight Taubman's desire for authenticity and expression. "So Not Me" is a candid look at societal pressures and the liberation found in rejecting them. Meanwhile, "Sing Your Song" serves as an encouragement to embrace one's true voice.

The album concludes with "Love Is the Rule" and the titular track, "The Gospel of Getting Free". These songs encapsulate the album's core message of love, freedom, and emotional liberation. "Love Is the Rule" emphasizes the power of love as a guiding principle, and "The Gospel of Getting Free" serves as a triumphant anthem of personal liberation.

In Taubman's words, "My new album The Gospel of Getting Free has been like a ship on which I can finally sail home. I see only now that my three albums are primers that guide me out of my own complex trauma to become my true self." Such a sense of emotional liberation and joy is palpable throughout the 10-track offering.
