Karin Fransson continues Commuter Diaries series with soulful third volume

With emotive ballads and vibrant, jazz-infused tracks, Karin Fransson's Commuter Diaries, Vol. 3 is a summer jam you can't miss.

Karin Fransson's latest release, Commuter Diaries, Vol. 3, is a three-song EP that captures the essence of post-pandemic life and everyday commutes. Released August 2, 2024, the work's touching and relatable listening tone is drawn from the singer-songwriter's personal experiences.

It opens with "Leave It Alone", an emotive ballad featuring Fransson's delicate vocals, rich viola and string arrangements, and acoustic guitar. Morten Ankarfeldt, a regular collaborator, provides subtle bass lines. The lyrics, "A bad habit / Looking for a high / But pictures only paint the fires / If I had a patch to stick on to catch / The surge / To numb the urge I would," touch on the struggles of resisting temptation and seeking solace.

"Mindless Mutter", the second track, brings a playful, mid-tempo rhythm with a jazzy pop vibe. Fransson blends contributions from both returning and new collaborators. Gisli Kristjansson adds finger clicks and playful drum and synth arrangements, creating a lively backdrop for Fransson's guitar and vocals. Pianist Jessica Lauren, a key figure in the UK Acid Jazz scene, enriches the song with her exceptional piano accompaniment and the whimsical Celesta instrument. "You made it / It unfolds / I enabled / Watch me fold / Into the darkness and cold / Alone I wandered down the road / With no-one to hold," Fransson sings, exploring feelings of loneliness and self-reflection. The song concludes with Alex Fletcher's perfectly executed trumpet lines.

The third track, "Burning Shivers", which Fransson produced alongside fellow LCCM alum Steve Holmes, exudes a relaxed atmosphere, layered with captivating keys, bass, guitar, and subtle percussion. Fransson's sultry vocals and minimal electric guitar playing add depth, particularly during the trembling triplets in the choruses. Legendary drummer and guitarist Nick Van Gelder, known for his work with Jamiroquai, brings his extensive experience to the track. With lyrics like, "Your attention makes weak / Oh it's all I ever seek / Every time I look / That hook / Pressure in my chest builds up / All the way up to the top / When will I rest, from/ Burning shivers," Fransson highlights the intensity of yearning and emotional turmoil. The EP then concludes with an acoustic rendition of the song recorded live in Sweden with musician Erik Andersson.
