Brock Davis on Everyday Miracle: "There's a beauty and power in wrestling with the mystery of life"

Armed with the hard-won wisdom that pain leads to growth and growth heralds new beginnings, singer-songwriter Brock Davis approaches life with a gleam in his eye and makes music he describes as "cut from a worn-denim blend of country and folk washed over with anthemic rock 'n' roll." Everyday Miracle, his sophomore album on Raintown Records, picks up where his last album A Song Waiting To Be Sung left off, offering an uplifting set of songs about life after a hard reset. Each track on the new effort encapsulates Brock's journey as did his debut, from being traumatized as a child to working professionally as a musician and raising his own family, for which he left music for a while.

"It's not about religion or music genre," the Santa Cruz, California-based artist is quick to point out. "But there's a beauty and power in wrestling with the mystery of life, and in the yearning for there to be something bigger than ourselves. I don't claim to know what's out there, but I'm fascinated by songs about a greater purpose in life, like love and art, that try to answer the essential question of why we are here."

The album opens with the titular track, "Everyday Miracle", which sees Davis reflecting on the small wonders that life offers each day. "There's promise in these chords/ There must be something more/ 'Cause from nothing beauty's born/ A little proof of a bigger truth," he sings, declaring this bigger truth as an everyday miracle. This theme of optimism continues with "Keep On", an anthemic country rock tune that encourages perseverance and resilience, featuring accentuated hooks and powerful backing vocals.

"Make A Family" shifts to a more introspective tone, with emotive melodies and lyrics that delve into the challenges of building a life with loved ones, despite which Davis believes the family can withstand. Then follows what he describes as "the emotional heart of the album." Built around soothing guitar playing and Brock's soulfully weary vocals, "Rain Falling on the Water" soars to redemption with a gospel choir joining him as the song reaches its end: "We are rain falling on the water, coming home again."

"You'd Think I'd Know By Now" carries a good-natured banter toward a spouse whose teenage dreams the speaker never knew they had. "You'd think I'd know by now/ Everything you're about/ And after all this time/ You'd think I'd figure you out." The next track, "I'll Always Be Your Dad", finds Davis sending a tender message to his child, letting them understand his decision to find a new love. "But just because I date her/ Doesn't mean that I don't love you/ I'm always thinking of you/ I ain't goin' anywhere and that's a fact/ And no matter what, I'll always be your dad," assures Davis.

In "It Takes Just One", Davis writes about speaking out against sexual harassment in the workplace, reflecting on his wife's own experiences that she shared with him. "It just takes one voice to speak out/ Someone to stand up/ It just takes one time to see the truth/ To turn everything around." "Give Forgiveness" and "The Warrior" offer contrasting but complementary themes. The former is a gentle reminder of the importance of forgiveness, while the latter is a winsome folk-infused song inspired by a photographic print of an old, battle-scarred mustang. The true story behind the print, of a career salesman turned photographer after being laid off, resonates with Brock's own themes of resilience and rediscovery.

"Ready for a Good Time" brings a lighter, more celebratory tone, preparing the listener for the final tracks. "September Rain" is a poignant ballad that captures the bittersweetness of change and parting, while "Angela (Please Say Yes)" and "My Promise To You" form a touching love story set. The former is a gorgeous piano ballad wedding proposal, and the latter is Brock's wedding vows set to a breezy country tune.

Writing and recording Everyday Miracle has been both artistically and personally inspirational for Brock. "Many artists and writers believe the best songs come from a broken heart," the singer reflects. "While pain can inspire beautiful creations, so can love. You can create from a place of hope, wonder, and love, and to me, that kind of creation is a true everyday miracle."
